ISLAMIC TILES talk by Dr Venetia Porter

Saturday 26th June at Chacewater Village Hall.
Despite this being the hottest day of the year nearly 40 members with some guests attended this excellent talk on Islamic Tiles at Chacewater.

Venetia Porter is a curator of Islamic & Contempory Middle Eastern Art at the British Museum and is responsible for the collection of Islamic art, in particular the Arab world and Turkey as well as the collection of the modern and contemporary art of the Middle East.

Her talk concentrated on the tile production in Turkey and Syria between the 15th and 18th centuries these tiles being characterised by their brilliant range of colours and designs. Many of these tiles made in Persia and Syria show the dominating influence of the blue-and-white porcelains of Ming China featuring plant and animal forms. The range of tiles shown was extensive, from individual examples to larger panels and decoration of whole buildings, including the most spectacular examples of Iznik tiles to be seen in Istanbul, the most famously in the ‘Blue Mosque’.

Outstanding tiled buildings from the 14th & 15th centuries can be seen in Samarkand while the best examples from the 16th & 17th centuries are in Isfahan with Damascus the prominent tile-producing city during this period.

Closer to home, Venetia showed us the work of William De Morgan and his tiled ‘Arab Hall’ in Leighton House, London. Stimulating and informative, this event was very well attended and received by the CCGG and friends.

Egyptian paste workshop

Saturday the 13th and 27th March at Fraddon Pottery
Seven eager students arrived at Fraddon Pottery for a much anticipated and exciting day to make buttons and beads. Barbara Bell began the day with short history and explanation of Egyptian paste and this was followed by instruction from both Fran Osborne and Barbara on the process. With bags of three separate colours ready to mix under their watchful eyes, all experienced fun, laughter and problems. Our masterpieces were left to be fired on stands made by Fran.
We followed this workshop up two weeks later to check our endeavours, all beads and buttons were finished off by reaming and cleaning holes as well as any imperfections.
Then with the excitement of being confronted by many colourful beads which we could purchase from Fran or Jill along with a variety of threads and findings to finish our masterpieces, our designs were modelled and much admired. This was a light hearted and most enjoyable workshop which was much appreciated by the students.
Thank you Barbara and Fran.

An Gwella

Following the success of the wonderful SHINE exhibition last year, the Cornwall Craft Association (CCA), the most prestigious craft and design and association in the county is thrilled to announce the launch of it's brand new and expanded contemporary craft and supplies show, "An Gwella".
For nearly thirty years the Cornwall Crafts Association has supported the craftmakers resident in Cornwall to encourage the highest standards of design and making. It also aims to reach a wider audience to promote a greater appreciation and understanding of contemporary design-led craftwork.
The Association is a member-driven self-supporting charity and has, since its inception in 1973, gained a reputation nationally for the quality of craftwork of its past and present members and attracts a wide-ranging audience from around the country. Exhibiting with the Association not only provides an outlet for selling work, but also allows the craftworker direct contact with customers who often commission work privately.
The President of the Association, HRH Prince Charles, Duke of Cornwall, says: "Visitors to the Association cannot fail to be impressed by member's skill and flair by which, through work exhibited, our lives are enriched."
An Gwella means “The Best” and this is the basis of our new show; the best opportunity you will have in 2010 to get your work in front of over 6,000 committed and enthusiastic buyers from all over the county and all over the world; the best opportunity these buyers will have in 2010 to see and select from the very best the designers, makers and craftspeople of Cornwall have to offer; and the best opportunity you will have next year to market yourself to the widest possible audience of craft and design driven publications and educational facilities in the country.
Supported by several key national and locally based craft and design magazines and centres of excellence, the An Gwella show has been developed by the largest and most prestigious designer / maker association in the South West, to celebrate the quality and diversity of contemporary Cornish crafts and design. Delivering a ‘one-stop-shop’ for the best designers and makers, as well as a host of supplies not previously readily available in Cornwall.
If you have any questions or require any additional information please do not hesitate to either email angwella@cornwallcrafts.co.uk or call Rhonda on 07786 385 364.
We very much look forward to receiving your application and having you join us at what will be the best craft and design event of 2010!

AGM at Ladock with John Maltby

A well attended AGM was this year held at Ladock Village Hall and our guest speaker, John Maltby, regaled us with a humorous and instructive talk about his methods and experience in making his internationally renowned sculptural pieces. He also reflected on the modifications he has lately made to his methods and from this we can all draw encouragement to continue experimenting and prolonging our chosen paths in ceramics and glass. Thank you John.

Pate de Verre Workshop

July 2009.
Ready to explore "the unknown" we started by making some new acquaintances while Gayle Matthias, Senior Lecturer at Tremough, gave an enjoyable talk and visuals of her career and work, mostly in glass.
During the second part of the workshop we sampled the pate de verre process. Using prepared simple rectangular moulds and ourown designs we lined the inner surface of these moulds with fine glass granules mixed with of water and a binder then prepared the surface for firing under Gayle's control. There were mixed responses to the process. Some were surprised by the patience needed; others simply enjoyed it. And one committed convert was made to Pate de Verre,
Satisfactory result I would say and soon we will see the fruits of our endeavours.

Use of Expressive Colour and Perspective with oil pastels

A workshop run by Julia Rowlands
Sunday 26th April 10am – 4pm The Institute, Market Place, Padstow PL28 8AL
The use of stunning and vibrant colours by the Expressionist painters, is the inspiration behind the techniques on this course. The oil pastel sketch is used in the field or in the studio from photographs as a preparatory tool for painting because of the unlimited possibilities to experiment with colour. A sketch provides the freedom for bold mark-making and playing with intensive colours.
The day course covers:
• An introduction to the colour wheel and its use.
• Gives the opportunity for all levels to be dynamic with intensive colours. Mixing complementary colours and layering and how effective and simple sweeps of colour can describe elements in our landscape; light and shadow, depth, form and texture.
• A personal exploration of colour and the expressive use of your own colour palette
• A demonstration
Materials to bring:
(Acid free) sketch book, Wetwipes(or similar) to clean hands
Kitchen towel. Please bring your own lunch ( tea and coffee provided)
IMPORTANT the pastels do not wash out of clothes

Studio visit & demonstration at Port Isaac Pottery

January 20th 2pm - 4pm
Cost £7.50 ( £10 non members)
We have been invited by Barbara Hawkins to look around the pottery that she and her husband Bill have run for many years at Port Isaac. She will also demonstrate some decorating techniques during the afternoon.
Barbara has unique artistic & decorating skills working both on clay and canvas. She met Bill at art school over 30 years ago when she was training as a graphic artist and he as a potter. They have built up a partnership working together in Port Isaac. Their home/studio is the old Methodist Chapel next to the harbour and the original organ and galleried seating area are intact.
Michael and Barbara are fellows of the Craft Potters Association
"All of our pieces are handmade to the highest standards and we take pride in the high quality of our work. Precious metal lustres and gold are applied and each piece has at least three firings in both our electric and oil-fired kilns. The bold and elegant forms complement the watercolour-style decoration, which are often inspired by our local surroundings. The small harbour, the fish, the local flora and fauna provide unlimited design potential for both the form and decoration of our pottery."

Report from Rosemary Cochrane

Dear CCGG Members,
It is a delight to keep in touch with you and when I heard you were holding your AGM in St Ives, with hot pasties followed by a tour of the Leach Pottery, I couldn’t resist asking if I could “tag along” and make it a weekend break in St Ives! Thank you so much for your group’s friendly company. I hope you will enjoy a short report I have compiled and which will be published in South Wales Potters’ newsletter in the future.

Combine an Indian Summer, B & B with a view of the sea, a plethora of art and craft galleries, exhibitions, paintings and pots to die for, time for the necessary indulgence of endless beach combing and sketching, fish and chips on the harbour wall, a garden haven of wonderful plants and even more wonderful sculptures, a restored museum and working pottery …. you’ve guessed? I could only have been in St Ives in mid October!
The Leach Pottery
It has been well publicised that The Leach Pottery in St Ives was rescued from neglect and semi dereliction by the Bernard Leach (St Ives) Trust. With help from the Penwith District Council they finally secured £1.7m for the restoration project. The original pottery and cottage are now listed buildings and the wood-fired climbing kiln is a scheduled ancient monument. The Old Pottery and Museum, new workshops and exhibition space were officially opened to the public earlier this year.

We were shown round the Old Pottery by Joanna Wason who, together with one of our group, Nic Harrison, reminisced about the days they had worked there. The clay store, throwing room, a small corner where the original Leach kick wheel still stands, seem to be just as they always have been. I could so easily visualize the space alive with turning wheels and wet pots. The old fireplace, where many a philosophy and glaze property would have been discussed, seemed to be whispering tales of some of the most important and influential potters of the 20th century who worked and visited The Leach Pottery. In an adjacent room the climbing kiln, built in 1923 and used until the 1970’s, stood quiet, with the flames and heat of past firings long gone. Imagine
the many thousands of pots which were unpacked from the chambers, many must still be treasured by their owners.

Jack Doherty was appointed Lead Potter at the beginning of the year and he talked to us about his own work in the loft studio. There he has set his wheel in the same place that Bernard Leach worked, under the window that looks down the road towards the town. The sense of part of the continuing tradition of studio pottery at St Ives clearly means a great deal to Jack. He produces his own pieces in porcelain for soda firing and has designed the soda fired standard ware to be sold at the Leach Pottery. The newly built ground floor workshop and studio has space for up to four potters and four MA students who will share their time between working for themselves and making pieces for the standard range. At present two MA students have been taken on.

The main and current Exhibition, The Bernard Leach Story curated by Emmanuel Cooper, was displayed in a new building dedicated to changing exhibitions. Another room was filled with John Leach’s pots, both his individual pieces and the Muchelney Pottery kitchen and table wares. Outside a timber walkway leads to the gallery and shop and it was a delight to linger on the wooden bridge that spans a gravelled space set out with planters and bamboos: a Cornish Japanese garden. In the gallery “Formed in Fire” showed new pots from eight kilns. The outstanding piece for me was a soda fired open form by Gail Nichols, rich with flashes of rich terracotta and tangerine surfaces and brown orange peel drifting into the inside of the bowl where a pitted, soft grey surface coated the concave sides.

Across the car park there are three new kilns: a small soda kiln a much larger one and a good sized kiln for stoneware reduction firings. The first results were, Jack Doherty reported, pleasing and the future results are anticipated with great enthusiasm.

Described as the iconic site for potters all over the world, the Leach Pottery in St Ives has to be on the “must visit “ list of potters and anyone who loves clay. I would have gone even without the temptation of the CCGG and a hot pasty.

Sutton Taylor and Michael Sheppard
The New Millennium Gallery was almost a last minute choice to visit over the weekend. But what a glorious unexpected treat was in store for us. Sutton Taylor’s lustre ceramics are for me the crème de la crème of this wonderful, complex glaze effect. Beautifully displayed in acres of quiet white space on two floors of this gallery, his large bowls, tall bottles and slab containers pulsated with vibrancy that only lustre can bestow. On the walls, near the pots, the paintings of Michael Sheppard hung in symbiotic elegance. As lifelong partners, the common creative inspiration of Sheppard and Taylor has been the love of Cornwall and the ever changing Cornish landscape. The juxta position of the lustre ware and abstract paintings was clearly not contrived in any way but was inspiring beyond description. I have to say that sometimes the amazing visual impact just takes your breath away and words are as impossible as they are superfluous. If I had sent you a post card it would have simply read: “Wish you were here!”

Nic Harrison Ceramics

Moving on – again!
Nic Harrison Ceramics, 73 Meneage Street, Helston, Cornwall, has relocated to Penhale Jakes
Our lease is due for renewal and sadly we have decided not to commit ourselves for another term. We have enjoyed our time in this high street location, making new friends and meeting new and past customers, but we are now ready for another move. My wife Jackie will also be moving her weaving workshop to Penhale Jakes and we will both be able to enjoy the stunning views overlooking the sea towards the Lizard Peninsula, a far cry from the roar of traffic, which passes the Gallery as I write.
Many of our past customers have found us in Helston, not realising that we relocated from Trelowarren in 2005 after 25 years there. Starting out in business in 1980 was not an easy task and each year has bought its highs and lows. Since then, we have shown our work successfully at various events and we still enjoy the direct contact with our customers.
My work has taken a slightly different direction in recent months as I have enjoyed using Porcelain clay, and experimenting with copper glazes. I continue to use stoneware in both the Domestic Ware and Individual pieces.
We intend to sell our work at more shows and exhibitions locally and nationally. These will be posted on the Events page on our website. If you would like to go on our mailing list, for information and invitations to events and exhibitions, please send us your postal address.
The Pottery and Weaving Studios are at Penhale Jakes, which is located between Ashton and Breage 200 yards off the A394 Helston to Penzance road. Visitors are welcome during working hours.

Save Rufford Ceramics Centre

Outcome of Meeting with Notts County Council, 4th January

Thank you for signing the petition to Save Rufford Ceramics Centre! There are now 1,276 signatories.

On 4th January, Carl Gray and Katie Greenfield, as representatives of the Save Rufford Ceramics Centre (RCC) Petition Group, met with NCC to discuss the petitioners’ concerns. We requested:
1. A 3-month stay of execution at The RCC (Rejected by NCC)
2. Clarification on the detail of NCC’s new model (Rejected by NCC)
3. To run an initial 3-month feasibility study for forming a National Ceramics Centre at Rufford, to build on The RCC’s reputation, embrace NCC’s local aims & objectives and open up new sources of funding for the whole community (Rejected by NCC)
It was apparent in the meeting that NCC’s representatives are in denial that they are custodians of a centre of international repute which is respected throughout the world.
We have written an open letter to NCC, urging them to reconsider.
You can read this letter and a detailed summary of what was discussed at the meeting at the Save Rufford Blog:
To up the pressure on NCC, we need to make more people aware of what is happening. Please ask your friends and colleagues to sign the petition:

In our and 1,276 other people's views to date, NCC's approach is fundamentally wrong and NCC, the community it serves and the UK will be poorer for it.
We welcome your feedback and comments via the blog, the petition forum or on email.
Thank you for your support!

Feast AND Famine!

The 13th National Pottery and Ceramics Festival.
Hatfield House 3rd – 5th August
This year’s Festival coincided with the hottest weekend of the summer. A Feast of pottery and ceramics was on show but the very hot weather meant a Famine of punters.
Those who stayed away missed the chance to see fine exhibitions of ceramic art and craft with plenty of space for leisurely viewing. Here was something for everyone. The five large exhibition tents housed much that was traditional or familiar but happily there were many challenging forms especially from the numerous overseas contributors and young ceramic graduates. Surface texture (sometimes extreme) was prominent as a decorative alternative to glazing, perhaps denoting an increasingly organic influence, the best exponents showing freely made pieces. Craig Underhill and Robin Welch displayed colourful hand built pieces with sculptural appeal and Svend Bayer’s part finished vessels gave an insight into the potter’s process.

If I had to pick stars of the show from the feast of exciting work I think they would be Eddie Curtis’s exquisite reduced copper red glazes combined on new Japanese inspired forms, Linda de Nil’s monumental textured anagama fired vessels, Becky Harle’s porcelain ribbon swirls and young Akiko Hirai’s tactile Japanese tea bowls.

Sadly there was a famine of Cornish potters and interesting open air demonstrations though some of the presentations were very informative, particularly Andrew Palin’s hand building and volcanic glazes. And if you ran out of money or cheques then there was no cash machine on site for that one last ”must have” purchase! Maybe next year.

On its new bigger site, the Festival’s true value must surely be the chance to exchange ideas and pick the brains of working potters. Famous or unknown, all exhibitors I spoke to were equally happy to talk about their work and techniques. No-one more so than the enthusiastic Wai Shing Cheung from Farnham College who was engagingly vague about the glazes and clay in his exciting tea bowls!

Cornwall Ceramics and Glass Group AGM

Cornwall Ceramics and Glass Group AGM meeting with Slideshow, talk and demonstration by Simon Carroll
1pm – 5pm Ladock Village Hall, Saturday 29th September 2007

At 1pm refreshments, including free pasties, will be available plus a chance to look at and buy books and equipment.
2pm onwards, a demonstration and slide show by potter Simon Carroll followed by The Cornwall Ceramics and Glass Group AGM.

Simon Carroll’s work is highly original and internationally known. The forms are made from sections that are thrown, pressed into moulds to give surface patterns and textures and assembled together often altered and pushed into eccentric shapes.
He currently works in a studio converted from a derelict airfield building near Padstow. He uses a simple vocabulary of slips and glazes in an exciting and spontaneous way giving great scope for intuitive expression.

Mould making for glass slumping & open casting

Summerschool
10th and 11th July 2007
This workshop will introduce you to basic mould making recipes so that simple, yet versatile moulds can be produced for two differing Kiln-formed glass processes. It depends what type of glass you place into/over a mould and the temperature to which the kiln is fired as to what the end result will be: Sheet glass can either be slumped into or over a mould in the kiln to create a new form and texture. Gentle, controlled heating of the surface of the sheet glass causes it to soften and deform in the kiln. Alternatively, glass cullet (chunks of broken glass) can be placed into a mould and heated until the glass melts to take on a solid shape (open casting). You will have the opportunity to make models out of a variety of materials, and working on a small scale, be able to begin to explore both processes. It would be beneficial if you had some experience of glass cutting in order to take full advantage of the time available.
Cost £199
Book the glass coldworking workshop at the same time and save £44
Both workshops £335

Contemporary Ceramics & Raku Firing

This 4 day workshop will take the novice or complete beginner through the basic stages of hand building with clay. By learning how to use coiling and slabbing methods, you will quickly find the confidence to produce a series of works. The first 3 sessions will include several short lectures aiming to introduce you to all aspects of clay technology; contemporary ceramics and raku firing; an information pack will be available to ensure that you remember everything once you go home.
The final day of the workshop will get you doing your very own raku firings; you will be inducted into the correct health and safety procedures for using a raku kiln and also given specifications for making your own home construction.
This immediate technique for firing clay began in Japan during the 16th Century. Work is rapidly fired then removed from the kiln when still glowing hot, plunged into sawdust and then sometimes water. Raku firing produces exciting and vibrant surface qualities, the raw firing produces a black smoky effect and a range of glazes produce anything from white crackles and turquoises to copper rainbow lustre.
This exciting new opportunity takes place in our state of the art Design Centre at Tremough and will give you the chance to familiarise yourself with the facilities and equipment, and see first hand what we have to offer. This four day workshop promises to be a lot of fun and the perfect opportunity to learn enough about working with clay to get you well on your way to producing work at home.
A basic ceramics toolkit is included in with the price of the workshop and clay will be available for you to purchase to take away afterwards.
Cost £295

Ceramic shell moulding

Ceramic shell moulding for glass and bronze casting, 13th,14th,15th,16th and 17th August 2007.
5 day workshop with established metal and glass designer Aron McCartney
A completely hands-on workshop demonstrating the process of casting glass using ceramic shell moulds. This mould technique has long been a popular method in metal casting foundries as it can produce superior castings with excellent definition. The process and material use is economic, producing high quality castings with accurate surface detail, achieving superior surface finish than usual investment moulds. The process applied to glass achieves similar qualities while also allowing otherwise difficult shapes and large casting to be realised efficiently.
Participants model their own designs in wax, learn about the application of ceramic shell to wax work, de-wax the mould and load the mould with glass in a kiln for the casting process to begin. Cold process finishing techniques complete the work.
Complete beginners in glass casting as well as practising studio glass artists wishing to learn a new innovative process which can also be applied to hot glass, will find this course equally beneficial and stimulating.

Pate de Verre

19th, 20th, and 21st September 2007
3 day glass workshop with celebrated glass artist Gayle Matthias
Pate de Verre is a kiln-formed glass technique utilising finely crushed glass frit, sugar-like in consistency, mixed with water and a binding agent, to form a paste which is applied to the surface of a refractory mould. Layers of paste are built up to form a hollow shell. This process offers controlled placement of colour, intricate patterning and detail.
The Pate de Verre workshop is suitable both for beginners and experienced makers.

Carolyn Genders

Sources of Inspiration’ Workshop
by Carolyn Genders
Saturday 28th April, 10am - 4pm 2007
At Rock Institute Hall, Rock near Wadebridge

There are times when, as an artist, you struggle for inspiration.
Carolyn Genders author of ‘Sources of Inspiration for Ceramics and the applied arts’ has been invited to give a workshop on ideas that will spark the creative imagination. As a professional ceramist for over 20 years and a fellow of the Craft Potters Association, she has over this time, amassed an eclectic collection of photographic images which, along with her sketchbooks form the basis from which she draws inspiration for her ceramics. She will describe how images can be visually abstracted and developed to create other beautiful patterns, designs and forms, suitable for ceramicists, glassmakers and artists alike.
The talk and slideshow will be followed by a visit to the nearby beach at Porthilly and practical participation for members. There will be an end of workshop discussion.

Aberystwyth Ceramics Festival

If you are interested in going to the Aberystwyth Ceramics Festival this summer, dates are 29th June - 1st July,, there may be a chance of some accommodation for one or two if you email Andrew Nicholls
Since it began in 1987 the International Ceramics Festival has grown to become the UK's leading ceramics event. It offers teachers, students, ceramic artists, collectors, working potters and amateurs alike the chance to meet and study the work of distinguished, internationally known craftspersons from Wales, the UK and many countries worldwide.
The Festival attracts about 800 participants to a series of lectures, practical demonstrations and exhibitions over three days. The focus is both practical and inspirational - kilns are built and fired, pots made and demonstrations given. Guest artists also have their own workspace enabling more in depth discussions and exchange of ideas.Over the years the Festival has built up a reputation for featuring some of the world's best known ceramic artists and potters, many new to this country and 2007 will be no exception.
During the festival there are also selling exhibitions, bookstands and a comprehensive display of products from leading pottery manufacturers and suppliers. The aim is to make the weekend as relaxed and accessible as possible.
