May 11.12.13th 2012 at Blackthorpe Barn, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. The show is being organised by potters Tim Huckstepp & Mike Goddard, who both have long standing experience of British & International events. Blackthorpe Barn is situated in Rougham Forest, just off the A14 J45, having superb links to all the major towns in East Anglia. The Barn has a long & distinguished history, and is a truly beautiful location for such an event. To broaden the public appeal an element of glass is being included. On site camping and an exhibitor catering facility, will help to provide you with a social as well as a great business opportunity. You can apply straight away, participants will be selected, and we will allocate spaces between now & November 30th, to give you maximum planning time. International Ceramics Festival, Aberystwyth

CCGG at the 2011 International Ceramics Festival,  Aberystwyth
What a trip; what fun. This bi-annual event should not be missed. The ICF, with the inimitable Jim Robison as Master of Ceremonies , presented many luminaries of the international ceramic world who provided the assembled enthusiasts with valuable and entertaining insights into their methods and passions. In far away Aberystwyth a warm weekend was a great  opportunity to meet a wider community of like minded folk, exchange ideas and perhaps marvel at the some of the extremes of  ceramic craft.  Alongside the entertaining “pyro-maniacs” with their improbable kilns, the French primitive mud pots and the wonderfully enthusiastic  Ponimin M Hum, renowned potters presented work and techniques of enviable quality and ambition. Too many to list but by general CCGG consent,  Mark Hewitt,  Kate Malone ( CCGG guest in September) and above all,  Ruthanne Tudball were outstanding. Ruthanne’s easy presentation style and facility with wet clay epitomised the value of this weekend. Catch her if you can.
Not all work though. Much fun was had by all judging by the laughter in the bus (you know who are!) and , notwithstanding the chaotic accommodation registration, rooms were fine and the food  and beer decent. Thanks to Nina for booking the event, Carol for the smooth organising, travel and steering us over the hurdles of registration and last but not least Rob, for his marathon driving stint and safe delivery of  bunch of potters.
The next ICF is in 2013.

CERAMICS INSPIRED BY THE FOWEY RIVER

Living by the Fowey River has inspired me to make a collection of traditional and sculptural ceramics that I hope evokes the textures, the changing nature of the water and the places of interest on this beautiful river.
All the pieces in this exhibition are essentially vessels, the traditional potter’s form, in many cases here opened out to plates to show the colours and decoration derived from local materials. The sculptural forms evoke the hard physical aspects of the shoreline.
Central to my ceramic work at Westcliff Pottery is the use of locally found materials for decoration and texture and in this exhibition it is appropriate that all the clays, beach sand and ash have been gathered in or near the Fowey River.

Modules range from the development of ideas and problem solving, the exploration of ceramic techniques, business studies and professional practice.
Students may be supported to explore wider approaches in terms of materials, while maintaining ceramics as their primary focus.

Mike Bailey is a partner in Bath Potters' Supplies. Both a scientist and a studio potter, he is a frequent contributor to Ceramic Review and has written several handbooks on Glazing including Cone 6 firing and Oriental glazes 

 The day will cover 

• Basic chemistry of glazes
• Calculating the % analysis of a glaze recipe( Basic calculators and pens/pencils needed)
• Describing a set of glazes - matt, satin and some crystals, transparent
• Plotting glazes and glaze materials on a graph. Hitting the eutectic.
• Different base glazes and glaze types e.g. Barium matts, copper reds, tenmoku etc.
• Other variables, especially clay body, glaze thickness, temperature, firing regime and consistency of material supply

Elemental – Ken Matsuzaki    Ken Matsuzaki is a Japanese potter, the favoured apprentice of Tatsuzo Shimaoka (the National Living Treasure). Working from Mashiko Matsuzaki he enjoys an international reputation.This film shows him throwing in his workshop and features unique footage of him firing his Anagama kiln, with the help of Phil Rogers who commentates on the process, and his exhibition in the UK.

Chihuly in the Hotshop – Dale Chihuly    Dale Chihuly’s passionate mission to explore and push beyond the boundaries of glassblowing has never been more captivating!
This film was premiered on the opening weekend at the 19th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival

The Pottery Industry – 20th century to today    A selection of archive films from different periods from the 1920’s to today featuring individual pottery firms and processes including Twyfords, Spode and Moorcroft plus sagger making and craft pottery of the 1950s.

Kiln Formed Glass – Rudy Gritch    Rudi Gritsch, an Austrian kiln forming artist takes viewers through many of his processes involving the kiln. We follow him as he takes his work from the initial phases of design through the detailed setups, firings and finishing processes to completed works of art.

As you may have heard, Dr Venetia Porter has invited CCGG members to meet her at the British Museum London to look at Islamic tiles and pottery from the museums reserve collection. There has been a change of date for this event; it is now Weds 12th January 2011. We will meet Venetia Porter for a behind the scenes look at ceramics from the collection. There is no entry cost, but you need to make your own way to London and meet as a group on British Museum entrance steps, Great Russell Street at 12.45p.m. Weds12th January. We will be with Venetia from 1p.m. - 3p.m. and have the unique opportunity to look at, and examine at first hand Islamic ceramics from the BM collection, some not usually displayed. (The new Gallery of the Craft Potters Association , 63, Great Russell St should be open by then, which could be well worth a visit too, while there)

Cornwall Ceramics and Glass Group – Jo Connell Workshop 11^th September 10 a.m - 4 p.m. Trevone WI Hall, North Cornwall

Originally this was planned to be a 'hands on'workshop for 12. We have had  20 requests for tickets for Jo Connell Workshop so far. We would like to offer this event to all that that apply. After discussion with Jo Connell we have decided to change the format of the day, and she is quite happy with this.

In order to accommodate a few more people Jo will give a slide show/ talk and demonstrations but there will not be hands-on practical work for members. There will be plenty of time to take notes, ask questions and Jo’s demonstrations will be projected so that all can see. Hopefully she can cover more techniques too.

The ticket price is going down accordingly to £25. (£30 non member) including tea/coffee, but bring your own lunch.There is room in the Hall at Trevone for 3-4 more people. Members are always keen to see what others are making so this year CCGG members attending the AGM on October 9th are invited to display a piece of work for others to view (and perhaps buy). I will be setting up at 9.00am on the day so if you are bringing a piece please be prompt.

Just one piece each with a descriptive label or card (credit card size would be good) with your name and/or studio name. Price on the back if selling.

Needless to say the CCGG cannot take responsibility for damage to any piece exhibited so please, nothing wobbly or balancing on a pin!

ISLAMIC TILES talk by Dr Venetia Porter

Saturday 26th June at Chacewater Village Hall.
Despite this being the hottest day of the year nearly 40 members with some guests attended this excellent talk on Islamic Tiles at Chacewater. 

Venetia Porter is a curator of Islamic & Contempory Middle Eastern Art at the British Museum and is responsible for the collection of Islamic art, in particular the Arab world and Turkey as well as the collection of the modern and contemporary art of the Middle East.  

Her talk concentrated on the tile production in Turkey and Syria between the 15th and 18th centuries these tiles being characterised by their brilliant range of colours and designs. Many of these tiles made in Persia and Syria show the dominating influence of the blue-and-white porcelains of Ming China featuring plant and animal forms. The range of tiles shown was extensive, from individual examples to larger panels and decoration of whole buildings, including the most spectacular examples of Iznik tiles to be seen in Istanbul, the most famously in the ‘Blue Mosque’.  

Outstanding tiled buildings from the 14th & 15th centuries can be seen in Samarkand while the best examples from the 16th & 17th centuries are in Isfahan with Damascus the prominent tile-producing city during this period. 

Closer to home, Venetia showed us the work of William De Morgan and his tiled ‘Arab Hall’ in Leighton House, London. Stimulating and informative, this event was very well attended and received by the CCGG and friends. 

Summer group exhibition

This years summer group exhibition runs until Saturday 10th July at St Peter's Church Hall, Port Isaac. Twenty ceramicists and glassmakers from the group have got together to transform the village hall and  exhibit their most recent work. This is the 3rd year that they have held their summer exhibition at Port Isaac. There is an exciting variety of work and styles  which ranges from large raku vessels from Penny McBreen, highly original teapots from Andy Titcomb, and delicate bowls from Frances Osborn, plus work from many more including Martin Jones, Heather Swain, Nicky May, Sue Gordon, Sirone Devadason, Jane Suchodolski, Linda Jewell, , Jane Marks, Jenni Phillips, Barbara Bell, Rowan Fawdon, Samme Charlesworth and Val Andrews, plus glass from Sarah Trewellha, David Stephens and Brenda Albert, . Danka Napiorkowska has been invited as a guest artist  to show her  pastels of flowers and fish  subjects which combine a vibrancy of colour with blended tones  and for which she is well known.

Danka is taking part in the Open Studios event this year and hopes you will visit her if you are in this part of Cornwall. Open 12pm-6pm daily but closed on Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd June. Her new studio is not finished so she is using a marquee in the garden, all sign-posted. Her present studio (very small) is also available for viewing work.
Although there are 150 artists/craftspeople opening their studios in Cornwall there are only 4  in North Cornwall, fortunately they are situated close together if you want to make a day of it.
Please go and see her new work, refreshments available!

Egyptian paste workshop

Saturday the 13th and 27^th March at Fraddon Pottery

Seven eager students arrived at Fraddon Pottery for a much anticipated and exciting day to make buttons and beads. Barbara Bell began the day with short history and explanation of Egyptian paste and this was followed by instruction from both Fran Osborne and Barbara on the process. With bags of three separate colours ready to mix under their watchful eyes, all experienced fun, laughter and problems. Our masterpieces were left to be fired on stands made by Fran.

We followed this workshop up two weeks later to check our endeavours, all beads and buttons were finished off by reaming and cleaning holes as well as any imperfections.

Then with the excitement of being confronted by many colourful beads which we could purchase from Fran or Jill along with a variety of threads and findings to finish our masterpieces, our designs were modelled and much admired. This was a light hearted and most enjoyable workshop which was much appreciated by the students.

Following the success of the wonderful SHINE exhibition last year, the Cornwall Craft Association (CCA), the most prestigious craft and design and association in the county is thrilled to announce the launch of it's brand new and expanded contemporary craft and supplies show, "An Gwella".
For nearly thirty years the Cornwall Crafts Association has supported the craftmakers resident in Cornwall to encourage the highest standards of design and making. It also aims to reach a wider audience to promote a greater appreciation and understanding of contemporary design-led craftwork.

AGM at Ladock with John Maltby

A well attended AGM was this year held at Ladock Village Hall and our guest speaker, John Maltby, regaled us with a humorous and instructive talk about his methods and experience in making his internationally renowned sculptural pieces. He also reflected on the modifications he has lately made to his methods and from this we can all draw encouragement to continue experimenting and prolonging our chosen paths in ceramics and glass. Pate de Verre Workshop

July 2009.
Ready to explore "the unknown" we started by making some new acquaintances while Gayle Matthias, Senior Lecturer at Tremough, gave an enjoyable talk and visuals of her career and work, mostly in glass.
During the second part of the workshop we sampled the pate de verre process. Using prepared simple rectangular moulds and ourown designs we lined the inner surface of these moulds with fine glass granules mixed with of water and a binder then prepared the surface for firing under Gayle's control. There were mixed responses to the process. Some were surprised by the patience needed; others simply enjoyed it. And one committed convert was made to Pate de Verre,
Satisfactory result I would say and soon we will see the fruits of our endeavours.

Pete Bousfield, Sylvie Glinister and CC&GG member Viv Robertson are exhibiting at the the Falmouth Poly, Church Street, Falmouth for a week. the show is called REUNION It features the work of 3 old college mates who were at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art in the 60's and now work in Cornwall.
Viv Robertson is also exhibiting at The Great Atlantic Gallery, Falmouth. It runs from August 9th for a week and features the work of painter/printmaker Pat King and Viv Robertson's ceramics.

Exhibition of ceramics and glass at Port Isaac

For the second year the CCGG mounted its Springtime exhibition at theChurch Hall in Port Isaac and the sterling efforts of members resulted in a stunning presentation of the wide variety of work undertaken the CCGG. The valuable success and experience of this exhibition and its management will certainly help us with future selling events for the membership. John Maltby was born in Lincolnshire in 1936. He studied at Leicester College of Art and Goldsmith's College in South London and went on to teach art.In 1962 he joined David Leach at Lowerdown Pottery in Devon. He started his own workshop at Stoneshill, near Crediton, Devon in 1964 and has remained there since. For twelve years he made domestic wares and studio pieces in earthenware, stoneware and porcelain, and then discontinued the kitchen and tableware in favour of one-off pots.John's work is characterised by the decoration, often contrasting dark and light areas of colour, and its sense of form. He lectures in the UK and abroad, and is exhibited in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

OPEN AIR CERAMICS and GLASS MARKET

We have booked a licence for the group to trade on Lemon Quay piazza on the above dates. As last year each day will be in the style of a French provincial town ceramics/glass market, this will be a selling direct to the public day, hopefully fun and profitable. We shall be open to the elements.

The requirements for each applicant are:
Provide his/her own table (6ft x 3ft max) and cloth to cover surface, dropping to ground to hide storage boxes and tied to stop flapping in the wind.
Be responsible for his/her own display, sales and packaging.
May provide own protection from the elements (Gazebo or umbrella) if desired (carefully weighted down on pavement, and you are liable for its safe use).
Cars and small vans only on the quay, must be removed and parked elsewhere by 8.30am and not return until 5pm.
You can book for either or both days.

Exhibition of Ceramics and Glass

Masterclass with David and Margaret Frith

Saturday 16th May 10 am – 4 pm, Design Centre, Tremough Campus, University College, Falmouth
David and Margaret Frith set up their first workshop in 1963. Their reputations are well established. David with his mastery of the potter's wheel makes majestic pieces decorated with his personal style of waxed motifs under heavy reduction overglazes and glaze trailing. Margaret concentrates on individual porcelain with carved decoration or coloured glazes as well as producing a comprehensive range of domestic ware and decorative stoneware. Both are Fellows of the Craft Potters Association and David is a selected member of the Crafts Council. They both have work in many private and public collections and exhibit widely in the UK and abroad.

Use of Expressive Colour and Perspective with oil pastels

The use of stunning and vibrant colours by the Expressionist painters, is the inspiration behind the techniques on this course. The oil pastel sketch is used in the field or in the studio from photographs as a preparatory tool for painting because of the unlimited possibilities to experiment with colour. A sketch provides the freedom for bold mark-making and playing with intensive colours.
The day course covers:
• An introduction to the colour wheel and its use.
• Gives the opportunity for all levels to be dynamic with intensive colours. Mixing complementary colours and layering and how effective and simple sweeps of colour can describe elements in our landscape; light and shadow, depth, form and texture.
• A personal exploration of colour and the expressive use of your own colour palette
• A demonstration

(Acid free) sketch book, Wetwipes(or similar) to clean hands

Studio visit & demonstration at Port Isaac Pottery

We have been invited by Barbara Hawkins to look around the pottery that she and her husband Bill have run for many years at Port Isaac. She will also demonstrate some decorating techniques during the afternoon.
Barbara has unique artistic & decorating skills working both on clay and canvas. She met Bill at art school over 30 years ago when she was training as a graphic artist and he as a potter. They have built up a partnership working together in Port Isaac. Their home/studio is the old Methodist Chapel next to the harbour and the original organ and galleried seating area are intact.

After lunch, there will be a short talk in the upstairs workshop by Harry Juniper, about the history of North Devon pottery in general, and his traditional scraffito harvest jugs in particular.

A Celebration of Wood-firing

Following on from the success of April’s “Salt & Soda” weekend workshop at the Whichford Pottery, just north of Oxford, this two-day event, supported by the CPA will feature practical master-classes, talks and seminars by several of Britain’s leading exponents of wood-firing. Guest potters already confirmed are Charles Bound, Svend Bayer, Nic Collins and David Garland. Places on the Weekend Workshop are limited, so early booking is advisable. Cost £125 (£100 CPA members). Lunches, coffee, tea and home-made cakes included.

A new wood-fired kiln has been built at Whichford, in readiness for the workshop weekend. It was fired for the first time recently to cone 10 reduction and the fired results are very encouraging. It will be fired on the Saturday of the workshop weekend, (by John Jelfs) and opened on the Sunday.

The weekend, which is supported by the CPA, will be fun and informative with something for everyone interested in hand-made ceramics. Comments at the last Whichford workshop (Salt & Soda) included:

Dear CCGG Members,
It is a delight to keep in touch with you and when I heard you were holding your AGM in St Ives, with hot pasties followed by a tour of the Leach Pottery, I couldn’t resist asking if I could “tag along” and make it a weekend break in St Ives! Thank you so much for your group’s friendly company. I hope you will enjoy a short report I have compiled and which will be published in South Wales Potters’ newsletter in the future.

Combine an Indian Summer, B & B with a view of the sea, a plethora of art and craft galleries, exhibitions, paintings and pots to die for, time for the necessary indulgence of endless beach combing and sketching, fish and chips on the harbour wall, a garden haven of wonderful plants and even more wonderful sculptures, a restored museum and working pottery …. you’ve guessed? I could only have been in St Ives in mid October!
The Leach Pottery
It has been well publicised that The Leach Pottery in St Ives was rescued from neglect and semi dereliction by the Bernard Leach (St Ives) Trust. With help from the Penwith District Council they finally secured £1.7m for the restoration project. The original pottery and cottage are now listed buildings and the wood-fired climbing kiln is a scheduled ancient monument. The Old Pottery and Museum, new workshops and exhibition space were officially opened to the public earlier this year.

We were shown round the Old Pottery by Joanna Wason who, together with one of our group, Nic Harrison, reminisced about the days they had worked there. The clay store, throwing room, a small corner where the original Leach kick wheel still stands, seem to be just as they always have been. I could so easily visualize the space alive with turning wheels and wet pots. The old fireplace, where many a philosophy and glaze property would have been discussed, seemed to be whispering tales of some of the most important and influential potters of the 20th century who worked and visited The Leach Pottery. In an adjacent room the climbing kiln, built in 1923 and used until the 1970’s, stood quiet, with the flames and heat of past firings long gone. Imagine
the many thousands of pots which were unpacked from the chambers, many must still be treasured by their owners.

Jack Doherty was appointed Lead Potter at the beginning of the year and he talked to us about his own work in the loft studio. There he has set his wheel in the same place that Bernard Leach worked, under the window that looks down the road towards the town. The sense of part of the continuing tradition of studio pottery at St Ives clearly means a great deal to Jack. He produces his own pieces in porcelain for soda firing and has designed the soda fired standard ware to be sold at the Leach Pottery. The newly built ground floor workshop and studio has space for up to four potters and four MA students who will share their time between working for themselves and making pieces for the standard range. At present two MA students have been taken on.

The main and current Exhibition, The Bernard Leach Story curated by Emmanuel Cooper, was displayed in a new building dedicated to changing exhibitions. Another room was filled with John Leach’s pots, both his individual pieces and the Muchelney Pottery kitchen and table wares. Outside a timber walkway leads to the gallery and shop and it was a delight to linger on the wooden bridge that spans a gravelled space set out with planters and bamboos: a Cornish Japanese garden. In the gallery “Formed in Fire” showed new pots from eight kilns. The outstanding piece for me was a soda fired open form by Gail Nichols, rich with flashes of rich terracotta and tangerine surfaces and brown orange peel drifting into the inside of the bowl where a pitted, soft grey surface coated the concave sides.

Across the car park there are three new kilns: a small soda kiln a much larger one and a good sized kiln for stoneware reduction firings. The first results were, Jack Doherty reported, pleasing and the future results are anticipated with great enthusiasm.

Described as the iconic site for potters all over the world, the Leach Pottery in St Ives has to be on the “must visit “ list of potters and anyone who loves clay. I would have gone even without the temptation of the CCGG and a hot pasty.

Sutton Taylor and Michael Sheppard
The New Millennium Gallery was almost a last minute choice to visit over the weekend. But what a glorious unexpected treat was in store for us. Sutton Taylor’s lustre ceramics are for me the crème de la crème of this wonderful, complex glaze effect. Beautifully displayed in acres of quiet white space on two floors of this gallery, his large bowls, tall bottles and slab containers pulsated with vibrancy that only lustre can bestow. On the walls, near the pots, the paintings of Michael Sheppard hung in symbiotic elegance. As lifelong partners, the common creative inspiration of Sheppard and Taylor has been the love of Cornwall and the ever changing Cornish landscape. The juxta position of the lustre ware and abstract paintings was clearly not contrived in any way but was inspiring beyond description. I have to say that sometimes the amazing visual impact just takes your breath away and words are as impossible as they are superfluous. If I had sent you a post card it would have simply read: “Wish you were here!”

Back by popular demand, we will be returning to Svend Bayer’s studio for his annual sale, at which you should be able to acquire wonderful examples of work by this renowned potter at bargain prices. We shall also have the opportunity to see his remarkable wood fired kilns, in which his work is fired to cone 12 over a period of about four days. The pottery is at Duckpool Cottage, Sheepwash, Black Torrington, North Devon Ex21 5PW and is best approached from Highampton on the Holsworthy to Hatherleigh road, turning left to travel due north, passing straight through Sheepwash village square, continuing for about 1.5 miles to Filleigh Moor, grid reference SX 485086. Please aim to be there at 10.30 am.
Lunch will be at the Half Moon at Sheepwash 12.30 –2pm
