Aberystwyth Ceramics Festival

If you are interested in going to the Aberystwyth Ceramics Festival this summer, dates are 29th June - 1st July,, there may be a chance of some accommodation for one or two if you email Andrew Nicholls
Since it began in 1987 the International Ceramics Festival has grown to become the UK's leading ceramics event. It offers teachers, students, ceramic artists, collectors, working potters and amateurs alike the chance to meet and study the work of distinguished, internationally known craftspersons from Wales, the UK and many countries worldwide.
The Festival attracts about 800 participants to a series of lectures, practical demonstrations and exhibitions over three days. The focus is both practical and inspirational - kilns are built and fired, pots made and demonstrations given. Guest artists also have their own workspace enabling more in depth discussions and exchange of ideas.Over the years the Festival has built up a reputation for featuring some of the world's best known ceramic artists and potters, many new to this country and 2007 will be no exception.
During the festival there are also selling exhibitions, bookstands and a comprehensive display of products from leading pottery manufacturers and suppliers. The aim is to make the weekend as relaxed and accessible as possible.

Can anyone help Stefanie?

Stefanie Christen aged 35 from Switzerland is looking for a practical stayin a pottery of about 4 months in Cornwall or Devon from July/August 2007 until October/November 20007. She could bring her own potters wheel and doesn`t need much support as she has some experience already.
She is a flexible person and could visit in April 2007 to discuss the further details. If anyone can help her please E-mail stefaniechristen@bluewin.ch or call: 004179/6681825

Visit to three potters

VISIT TO SVEN BAYER, CLIVE BOWEN, AND PHILIP AND FRANNIE LEACH
SATURDAY 25TH NOVEMBER 2006
A visit to three potters working in North Devon has been organised to coincide with Sven Bayer’s annual sale, which starts on the date above and is well worth visiting for great pots at very reasonable prices.
We are meeting at Sven’s pottery at Duckpool Cottage, Sheepwash, Black Torrington, North Devon at 10.30am. We shall be looking at his workshop, his two impressive wood fired kilns, and his high fired stoneware pots. The grid reference is SS 485086, Ordinance Survey Map 191, for all you keen map readers, or search on the Ordnance Survey website for the correct location.

We then adjourn to the Half Moon Inn at Sheepwash for an early lunch at 12.00 am. (Home made pasties and salad recommended).
Leaving the pub at 1.30pm we take a circuitous route along narrow but very attractive lanes (Jon Whitten thinks he can remember the way!) to Shebbear Pottery, arriving at 2.00pm, where Clive Bowen will show us around, including a look at his wood fired bottle kiln. Clive makes wonderful freely slip decorated earthenware using traditional techniques. Grid reference SS 433112.

Finally we meet at 3.30pm at Springfield Pottery in Hartland to visit Philip and Frannie Leach, who make decorated earthenware using traditional and contemporary approaches, fired in electric and gas kilns. Park in the village car park and walk to the pottery. Grid reference SS 257244. The visit will conclude at 4.30pm.

No need to book, but phone Jon Whitten on 01208 880836 if you are going, he can advise the pub of likely numbers for lunch.

Just Arts Winter Showcase St.Ives

Just Arts Winter Showcase
Mariners Gallery St Ives
29th October – 3rd November 2006
A few years ago, a group of artists and makers formed Just Arts to promote their work. They all have workshops and galleries in St Just: there are painters, sculptors, potters, furniture makers, jewellers, textile artists, photographers and a glass designer. Following the success of their Summer 2005 exhibition, this year the group is holding a winter show at the Mariners Gallery in St Ives.
Three CC&GG members are taking part. There is an open invitation for members to attend the show.

Jonathan Hancock’s earthenware and high fired stoneware pottery is hand thrown. His output ranges from large planters to all types of domestic ware, full dinner services, occasional one-off pieces and his unique trademark “bird jugs”. Jonathan enjoys experimenting with glazes and slips and textures to produce highly unusual and attractive colours and finishes, giving his pots a distinct and unique creative edge. www.stjust-pottery.co.uk

Helen Jay’s thrown tableware is a riot of colour, inspired by the intensity of light and colour in the local area. She works from her studio in Cot Manor, Cot Valley. www.helenjaypottery.co.uk
Fi Kilpatrick of Artglass-UK uses stained glass to create fresh innovative designs. From room or fireplace screens to backgammon boards or windows, as well as limited production kiln formed glass bowls & landscapes & figure studies, their potential in modern interiors/architecture is limitless. Artglass is at 30 Fore St, St Just, telephone 01736 788673. www.artglass-uk.com
