Taja – Japanese Potter

Taja – Japanese Potter
Handbuilt Porcelain – Master Class

Saturday, March 30th, 10.30 for 11.00 am start, Ladock Village Hall TR2 4PG

Two years ago Taja visited the CCGG to present his work and life as a potter in England, before giving us a truly inspiring practical workshop.  Many members who were there hand built pots with porcelain clay prepared for the event by Taja, who then took them to his workshop to glaze and fire in his kiln for a nominal fee of £5.00 resulting in wonderful mementos of the day.

By popular demand, Taja has kindly agreed to repeat his Masterclass on March 30th this year. If you wish to attend the day and be included in the practical session, or if you just wish to watch the masterclass, you will find joining details below. Please read carefully, as Taja has to plan the practical workshop. We therefore ask you to notify us beforehand if you wish to get your hands on porcelain.

When Taja decided to use porcelain clay, fascinated by its whiteness and translucent property, he was fortunate in 2009 to have help from Arts Council UK to develop a porcelain blue glaze.
“Most of my porcelain pieces are made from sliced porcelain slab clay. So the shape and size of each work is slightly different. It has an organic ceramic feel to it - gentle and warm. I also use porcelain coils to produce large one-off pieces. The glazes are made using my own porcelain blue glaze recipe, so called Seiji glaze (this literally means Porcelain Blue in Japanese). I use green and Tenmoku glaze for individual pieces to get a more dramatic effect .”
