Mike Bailey ‘Plotting and Predicting Stoneware Glazes’

who will talk and lead discussions/activities on  
‘Plotting and Predicting Stoneware Glazes’
at
Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum, Carthew, St Austell, PL26 8XG 
on Saturday 5th March 10.30 a.m - 3.30 p.m ( approx)
Mike Bailey is a partner in Bath Potters' Supplies. Both a scientist and a studio potter, he is a frequent contributor to Ceramic Review and has written several handbooks on Glazing including Cone 6 firing and Oriental glazes 
 The day will cover 
  • Basic chemistry of glazes
  • Calculating the % analysis of a glaze recipe( Basic calculators and pens/pencils needed)
  • Describing a set of glazes - matt, satin and some crystals, transparent
  • Plotting glazes and glaze materials on a graph. Hitting the eutectic.
  • Different base glazes and glaze types e.g. Barium matts, copper reds, tenmoku etc.
  • Other variables, especially clay body, glaze thickness, temperature, firing regime and consistency of material supply
  • Time for questions/discussion (please forward specific questions on glaze problems beforehand via ccggwebmail@googlemail.com marked Mike Bailey Glaze query)
  • It would be helpful for you to bring a laptop with any glaze calculation programs if possible (further details will be sent out with tickets) 
This is a unique opportunity for glazes to make sense with the help of a real expert
